Well, it made financial sense considering the popularity of the character, but artistically it seemed to have little reason to exist. Everyone already knows about the Joker. His sketchy lack of history is part of his chaotic appeal, so why explain it? And of course Heath Ledger was so great as the character already he won a posthumous Academy Award for his work in The Dark Knight. Where do you go from there?Well for director Todd Phillips the answer is telling the origin of the clown prince of crime as a gritty 1980s character study inspired by Martin Scorsese classics like Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Getting an actor as committed to frightening physical transformations as Phoenix will surely help, as will the impressive supporting cast including Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Brian Tyree Henry, Robert De Niro, and Brett Cullen as an asshole Thomas Wayne.We’ll see how the Joker movie shakes out when it hits theaters October 4th.
